As detailed just about everywhere, Facebook recently rolled out Facebook Places, the official Facebook entry into the already crowded Location-Based Services (LBS) marketplace.
With over 500 million users, Facebook Places already has more potential reach than all the other LBS services combined. Mathematically, it looks like this:
Impressive.
Is Facebook crashing the LBS party too late?
I checked into my office this morning for the 200th time. I think it’s safe to say that my check-in behavior with Foursquare and my iPhone is pretty automatic, leading me to believe that Facebook Places is essentially DOA. However, at the same time, I realize that I’m not Facebook’s target — I’ve been using Foursquare since it came to St. Louis. Facebook is likely targeting new users, and could tap into their considerable user base to acquire a lot of new users, fast.
